Pemerintah Kabupaten Berau menggelar Festival Derawan 2013 dijadwalkan berlangsung dari 21 Juni-22 September 2013 dalam usaha untuk Menuju Sail Derawan 2014. Pemerintah Kabupaten Berau sebenarnya sudah mengajukan usulan ke pusat untuk menggelar Sail Derawan pada 2013 namun belum mendapat restu karena pemerintah pusat telah menetapkan tahun 2013 untuk menggelar Sail Komodo. Pergelaran acara untuk memperkenalkan potensi maritim Indonesia itu dimulai dari Sail Bunaken (2009), Sail Banda (2010), Sail Wakatobi-Belitong (2011), Sail Morotai (2012) dan Sail Komodo (2013). Harapan menggelar Sail Derawan juga menjadi keinginan Pemerintah Provinsi Kalimantan Timur untuk mengangkat potensi wisata Berau menjadi salah satu simbol pariwisata andalan Pulau Kalimantan Indonesia .
